The control points established for this project were gathered using the Trimble R10 and VRS GNSS techniques by observing several surrounding geodetic benchmarks, and performing a site calibration on the set control points around the proposed site. Once this was performed, data could then be collected for the topographic plan.

The Trimble SX10 was utilized for this process as it provided an accurate robotic total station workflow for gathering important features; dense point cloud collection for the majority of existing site objects and inaccessible features such as the roadway and overhead power lines; and high resolution imagery with Trimble VISION to perform virtual DR measurements in the office and document the site conditions.

The Trimble SX10 utilizes Trimble Access as the field software solution to collect point, scan, and image data. Trimble Access’ new scanning feature allows users to scan and obtain imagery with the SX10. There are four scan types, Rectangular, full dome, polygon, and horizontal band:
- The rectangle mode requires the user to select two corners to define a rectangular scan area;
- The full dome mode will collect data for the SX10’s entire field of view;
- In the polygon mode, users can define a polygon scan area with three or more points,
- The horizontal band mode will scan the entire area below or above a selected point in a 360 band.

Each option is more suitable to a specific project purpose and data collection requirements. For this particular job the survey crew used the full dome scan option to ensure all necessary features were collected as well as others that the survey crew may not notice while in the field.

The survey station method allows the SX10 to be utilized as both a total station and a terrestrial scanner. Traverse, topographic, and as-staked can be collected in conjunction with scanned data. Performing scans with the SX10 is as simple as taking a topographic measurement.
